What is Direct Coating?
Transfer coating is a multi-stage process that creates flexible, aesthetically appealing coated fabrics—commonly referred to as vinyls or artificial leathers. These products are especially popular in:
- Furniture and upholstery
- Automotive interiors
- Interior trims and finishes
- Bags, wallets, and binders
Transfer coated products are differentiated by:
- Mass per square meter (gsm)
- Thickness (in microns)
Transfer Coating
The Production Process
1. Embossed Release Paper
The process begins with an embossed release paper, which contains the texture or pattern to be transferred to the final product. This sets the visual and tactile feel of the surface.
2. Skin Layer Application
A specially formulated skin paste is applied to the paper. As it dries, it takes on the exact pattern of the embossed surface, this becomes the top layer of the finished product.
3. PVC Layering
Multiple layers of PVC are applied, each with specific functional properties:
- Flexibility
- Stiffness or softness
- Colour
- Flame resistance
- UV stability
4. Backer Lamination
The final PVC layer is laminated with a backer material, which determines strength, stretch, and overall durability. The full construction is then oven-cured, solidifying the PVC.
After curing, the release paper is peeled away, leaving behind the finished, embossed product.
5. Customising Your Transfer Coated Product

Backer Options
The backer layer impacts flexibility, feel, and application performance. Choose from:
- Needled Polyester Backer
Soft, stretchable, and cost-effective. Ideal for general upholstery. - Jersey Knitted Polyester Backer
High stretch and recovery. Perfect for heavy-duty applications. - Point Bonded Non-Woven Backer
Thin and stable. Common in shoes, wallets, and smaller items.
Paste Adjustments
Neucoat’s paste can be reformulated to modify product performance, including:
- Colour Matching
We can match nearly any reference sample or Pantone. - Thickness Adjustments
Increase thickness using standard or blown (air-injected) paste layers - Stiffness Control
Adjust flexibility based on use case (softer for comfort, stiffer for structure). - Flame Retardant Additives
To comply with industry-specific fire resistance standards. - UV Stabilisers
Essential for products exposed to strong sunlight or outdoor use.
Emboss Options
Our emboss options deliver both function and aesthetic appeal.
Emboss Methods:
- Embossed Release Paper (Primary Method)
- Embossing Roller (Post-Production)
If needed, smooth-coated products can be reheated and passed through embossing rollers for a final texture layer.
Custom Embossing Available:
If your application requires a specific emboss pattern not in our inventory, we can explore sourcing custom embossing paper or rollers—subject to minimum volume requirements.
Lacquering
We apply protective lacquer coatings to:
- Extend product lifespan
- Improve cleanability
- Enhance or control surface sheen
Lacquer Types:
- Acrylic Lacquers
- PU (Polyurethane) Lacquers
Applicable to both printed and embossed surfaces.
Print Designs
We offer post-production printing using engraved rollers for decorative or brand-specific effects.
